Cafés
In Marseille, cafés aren’t just for grabbing a quick espresso. They’re lively places where people come to chill, chat, or even get some work done. There’s always a good reason to drop by a café: a morning coffee alone, tea-time with friends, soaking up the sun on a terrace, or for an apéro (early evening drink) which stretches into the night. Marseille’s cafés are a lifeblood of the city. And whatever mood you’re in, there’s always a café to suit it.
If you like spectacular views, head to Le Café de l’Abbaye (3 Rue d’Endoume). With its terrace overlooking the Vieux-Port, it’s a picture-perfect spot to unwind. Grab a coffee or drink at the end of the day as the sun sets over the boats and set the world to rights with your friends.
Or what about a stylish café with a green and arty touch? Check out Mostera (books, plants and coffee, 84 rue de Lodi), a peaceful haven where you can read, work, or just relax among the plants. It’s an elegant oasis with good coffee.
In need of sun and a big terrace? Next stop, a bakery at La Plaine: Gourmandises by Nico (Place Jean Jaurès) which offers focaccia, praline brioche or chicken and avocado sandwiches on their olive oil-infused bread. Sip your coffee in the morning sun and enjoy the atmosphere of La Plaine!
Just next door, there’s Mon Café, a friendly hangout that’s perfect for a coffee break or a casual meet-up. In fact, all the cafés on La Plaine are full of character and a mix of people, with the terraces like open-air stages where Marseille life unfolds.
In Réformés, you can head to l’Eclectique (30 cours Joseph Thierry) and take your time over a coffee in the sun or an apéro.
For a no-frills, local-style café, try O’Thierry (also on Cours Joseph Thierry). It’s a simple, welcoming spot where regulars can be seen chatting away.
For a great cafe-restaurant a bit off the beaten track, make for Golda (Allée Léon Gambetta). It’s a little gem of a place, with delicious dishes, well-crafted drinks and a relaxed atmosphere, just a stone’s throw from the city centre.
If hanging out around Cours Julien is more your thing, you’ll be spoilt for choice: there are many colourful, lively, creative cafés with a bit of a hipster vibe. Coming here is as much about having a coffee as soaking up inspiration.
Craving an afternoon treat? Stop off at Minoofi (rue Paradis) which has excellent cakes and drinks, or at Te Miti, a coffee shop with exquisite speciality brews and cookies to die for!
