Markets

If you want to eat tasty, fresh and affordable food, head to Marseille’s markets! You’ll find local, quality products, as well as flavours from around the world. These markets have an authentic feel, with every stall telling a story and every vendor knowing their job back to front.

Let’s start with the Noailles market, in rue du Marché-des-Capucins. It runs every day and all year round, from 8am to 1pm. If you’ve never been, you’re in for a surprise: there’s a huge variety of products. It’s a round-the-world gastronomical tour, with stands overflowing with vegetables, exotic fruit, and spices from the four corners of the globe, as well as local products. The market is a real neighbourhood hotspot and the prices are very reasonable!

Make sure to visit the Réformés market, held on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 8am to 1pm. It’s a neighbourhood market where people enjoy meeting or bumping into one another. You’ll find honey, chicken, fruit and vegetables, fish, bread and small food trucks. The market is located on a sunny square across the road from the Réformés church, with its two imposing white bell towers. You’ll also find a colourful flower market there, perfect for that special gift or for buying yourself a treat!

If you really want a deep dive into the local atmosphere, make for La Plaine market. Located on Place Jean Jaurès, this lively market is held three times a week and is a community hotspot where you’ll cross paths with everyone in the neighbourhood. The market runs from 7.30am to 1.30pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The stands are full of fresh produce and the atmosphere is always buzzing, with smiling, friendly vendors. You can also find rare, exotic spices at Fethi’s stall to add that special something to your dishes. This market not only has food items but also clothes, utensils, cleaning products, jewellery, etc. You can find most things you’re looking for at La Plaine!

If you’re a fan of cheese, artisanal farm products and good eggs, you must visit the Prado market. Stretching all along the Prado avenue, it’s slightly calmer but still lively. The market runs from 7am to 1pm, Monday to Saturday. It’s a great place to do quality shopping without blowing your budget. Among the top spots are the cheese stall L’Or des Alpilles, a real delight for your taste buds. Their cheeses are divine, and if you’re passionate about the subject, you’ll find yourself talking at length with the producers. For a bit of freshness, you can also find local aromatic herbs to give a bit of flair to your homemade dishes.

Whether you’re a foodie looking for top-quality products or an amateur chef, these markets are great places to uncover culinary treasures, interact with locals and find fresh produce to cook with.
