You can use your bank card from your country if your bank has an international option that will avoid you paying fees. If you need to open a French bank account, you\u2019ll find some useful information below.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that with French bank accounts, it\u2019s normal to pay a monthly fee for your account, and an annual fee for your bank card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Expressions&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In France, we use the initials \u2018CB\u2019 to mean <em>carte bancaire<\/em> (bank card). It\u2019s also sometimes called a <em>carte bleue<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When talking about cash, we often use the words <em>esp\u00e8ces<\/em>, <em>liquide<\/em> and <em>monnaie<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Traditional banks&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many banks in France, each offering different services. You can compare them on this dedicated government website: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarifs-bancaires.gouv.fr\/\">https:\/\/www.tarifs-bancaires.gouv.fr\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To open a bank account, you\u2019ll normally need to go to the bank and request an appointment. Don\u2019t forget to ask what documents you\u2019ll need to to bring. The most-used banks by Marseille residents who answered our survey were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cr\u00e9dit Agricole<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>La Banque Postale<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LCL<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Caisse d\u2019Epargne<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Online banks and neobanks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most banks also offer online-only bank accounts, you just need to ask them. You\u2019ll need less documents to open this kind of account.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have just arrived and you need a French bank account quickly, you can open a \u2018Nickel\u2019 account in 5 minutes in a newsagent&nbsp;: <a href=\"https:\/\/nickel.eu\/fr\">https:\/\/nickel.eu\/fr<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following banks were recommended by those who answered our questionnaire:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Revolut<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Boursobank<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>N26<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Getting a good deal&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some banks have special offers for students, and even give you some money when you open an account.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be careful when you sign a contract at a bank: pay close attention to hidden and annual costs, and don\u2019t hesitate to ask your bank for a precise summary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ethical banking&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might want to find out more about how ethical different banks are before you choose which one to bank with.
