Here\u2019s our guide to the main places to swim, starting with the nearest to the city centre, and ending with the furthest away.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Catalans beach (83 bus)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As the nearest beach to the city centre, this spot is often very, very busy but if you dive a bit deep, you\u2019ll find statues: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musee-subaquatique.com\/fr\/\">The Marseille<\/a> Underwater Museum! There are also pitches where you can play volleyball on this beach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Vallon des Auffes (83 bus)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A bit further along the corniche, you\u2019ll find the Vallon des Auffes, a small port where many people go for a dip in the sea. Easily reachable on foot or by public transport, you won\u2019t find any fine sand here, just big rocks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Malmousque \/ Endoume \/ Maldorm\u00e9 (83 bus)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The cove of Malmousque, an old fishing port, is now a very popular spot for swimming. Follow the seafront and you\u2019ll also find other small rocky spots where you can sunbathe and go for a dip. If you\u2019ve got water shoes, they\u2019ll come in handy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Proph\u00e8tes beach<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Proph\u00e8tes beach is sandy and quite large, and is popular with families, and friends meeting for the traditional French \u2018<em>ap\u00e9ro<\/em>\u2019, meaning an early evening social gathering around drinks and perhaps a small snack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prado beach<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The largest beach in Marseille is at Prado. It\u2019s more touristic than the city\u2019s other beaches, with many sporting facilities, lawns, and food outlets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Pointe-Rouge beach and beyond\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A bit further along, the Pointe-Rouge beach is a big, fine sandy beach with a family-friendly atmosphere and surrounded by restaurants. It can quickly get very full in the summer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Pointe-Rouge, you\u2019ll find a number of small beaches: L\u2019Abri C\u00f4tier (also known as the Phoc\u00e9ens beach), La Madrague, Le Bain des Dames, Les Goudes\u2026 We\u2019d recommend you explore them all, they\u2019re magnificent!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the other side of Marseille<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s just one beach on the northern side of Marseille: the Corbi\u00e8re beach. You can take the 35 bus to get there, and get off at the stop \u2018<em>Corbi\u00e8re base nautique<\/em>\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A bit further along, you\u2019ll find the <em>calanques<\/em> (rocky inlets) of the \u2018Blue Coast\u2019, starting at Niolon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Frioul islands<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For an 11\u20ac round-trip from the Old Port, you can visit the Frioul islands and explore their many beaches and inlets. Take care during the seagulls\u2019 nesting period as they are protective of their nests and their young. Make sure to stay on the paths!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Calanques National Park\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, Marseille is also famous for its <em>calanques<\/em>. The Calanques National Park is situated to the south of the city. With many hiking trails, this park is the best option for a real escape into nature, within easy reach of Marseille by public transport. The most well-known <em>calanques<\/em> are Sugiton, Morgiou, Sormiou and En Vau. Access to the park in the summer is restricted due to fire and overcrowding risks.
