The 9th district of Marseille
The 9th district (le neuvième arrondissement) of Marseille stretches over the south-east of the city, between the urban area and the natural massifs. It is a mostly residential district, with a calm atmosphere, and close to nature, in particular the hills and hiking trails leading into the Calanques National Park.
Main areas of the 9th district
Saint-Loup: a family-centered area
Saint-Loup is a lively residential area, popular with families, and with many convenience stores. There are schools, parks, clubs and associations, and a friendly neighbourhood vibe, all within a reasonable distance of the city centre.
Mazargues: calm and tradition
More to the west, Mazargues offers a peaceful, village-like atmosphere with its small squares, bakeries, and market. It’s appreciated for its calm environment, green spaces, and close proximity to hiking trails, in particular those leading to the calanque of Sormiou.
Why choose the 9th district?
- For a calm daily life, away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre.
- If you like nature and hiking, there’s direct access to the hills and the calanques.
- If you have your own form of transport—there is some public transport but the area is easier to get around by car.
Rental prices in the 9th district tend to be quite high, so this part of town won’t be suitable if you’re on a lower budget.
