European Health Insurance Card
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), is a free card that gives you access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in any European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland under the same conditions and at the same cost as locals.
Why is it worth having an EHIC?
- Access to Public Healthcare: It allows you to receive medical treatment in public hospitals and clinics if you fall ill or have an accident while traveling.
- Cost Savings: You are treated as a local resident, meaning you either receive free healthcare or pay the same reduced rates that locals do.
- Emergency Situations: It covers emergency medical care, including ambulance transport, visits to the emergency room, and necessary surgeries.
- Chronic or Pre-existing Conditions: It also covers treatment related to chronic or pre-existing conditions that become necessary during your stay.
- Peace of Mind: It provides security when traveling within Europe, knowing you can access healthcare if needed.
Important Notes:
- EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance. It does not cover private healthcare, rescue operations (e.g., mountain rescue), or repatriation costs.
- It is valid in all EU countries, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland.
- You should apply for it in your home country before traveling. In Poland, you can get it from the National Health Fund (NFZ).
