European Health Insurance Card

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), is a free card that gives you access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in any European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland under the same conditions and at the same cost as locals.

Why is it worth having an EHIC?

  1. Access to Public Healthcare: It allows you to receive medical treatment in public hospitals and clinics if you fall ill or have an accident while traveling.
  2. Cost Savings: You are treated as a local resident, meaning you either receive free healthcare or pay the same reduced rates that locals do.
  3. Emergency Situations: It covers emergency medical care, including ambulance transport, visits to the emergency room, and necessary surgeries.
  4. Chronic or Pre-existing Conditions: It also covers treatment related to chronic or pre-existing conditions that become necessary during your stay.
  5. Peace of Mind: It provides security when traveling within Europe, knowing you can access healthcare if needed.

Important Notes:

  • EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance. It does not cover private healthcare, rescue operations (e.g., mountain rescue), or repatriation costs.
  • It is valid in all EU countries, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland.
  • You should apply for it in your home country before traveling. In Poland, you can get it from the National Health Fund (NFZ).
