Emergencies

In Lisbon, in case of an emergency, you should:

  1. Call the emergency number:
    • 112 – This is the European emergency number, which works in Portugal and connects you to the police, fire department, and medical emergency services. Operators usually speak multiple languages, including English.
  2. Provide first aid if possible and safe to do so.
  3. Give the operator the following information:
    • Location of the incident (address, landmarks).
    • Type of emergency (e.g., car accident, fire, sudden health issue).
    • Number of people affected and their condition.
    • Your contact details.
  4. If medical help is needed:
    • You can go to the nearest Emergency Room (Urgência) in a public hospital.
    • It’s recommended to have the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if you are an EU citizen and not yet a resident in Portugal (there will be a co-payment by your home country)
    • You can call the SNS 24 number: 808 24 24. This is a really important number that can help you in a lot of situations. They can talk with you in english also, and you can have the opportunity to talk with nurses and tell them your symptoms.
    • In case you have an emergency during the day and you need a fast medical consult you can go to the “Centro de Saude” where you are enrolled. You should be starting a queue at 7 in the morning and wait to have a “Senha” (ticket) and wait for your turn to see a doctor. They can also give you a certificate of sickness.
  5. Contact your embassy:
    • If consular assistance is required, get in touch with your country’s embassy in Lisbon.
