Sport in Lisbon
In this article we want to share some tips about sport, not only as a healthy habit, but also as a way of inclusion, a way to feel integrated and a way to meet new people. Some of the people replied to our new questionnaire that they do sports on their own, or they can have some sports partners. Let’s explore their suggestions about how to find connections through the sports’ community in Lisbon.
There are apps Class Pass, Urban Sports that are used by the interviewed people to book some sports classes around gyms in Lisbon.
- Running or Cycling: Lisbon has many scenic spots for outdoor activities. You can run or cycle along the Tagus River, particularly the Cais do Sodré to Belém stretch, which offers a great view and a flat path.
The Eduardo VII Park and Monsanto Forest Park are also excellent for running and cycling.
There are also the Lisbon Marathon and the Lisbon Triathlon, and also the Ecopista Cycling Challenge for cycling. You can also join the Lisbon Running Club, or Lisbon Cycling Tours.
- Basketball courts : you can find (almost) all the basketball courts of the world here.
- If you like to padel and tennis there is the possibility to book your spot in the following sites: Instituto Superior Técnico; in a gym in Olaias district; at Lisbon Racket Centre, Lisbon Padel Club.
- Surf: Portugal is the country for surf!

If you go to Carcavelos Beach, which is the most famous beach and really easy to reach by train, you can find several Surfing Schools where you can have group or individual lessons. You can find them on the net or just walking by the sea and choose.
- Swimming : there are numerous swimming pools in Lisbon, if you want to take group class or go to swim by yourself. Some of them require subscription, others just the ticket to enter:

- Combat sports : the city offers a variety of clubs to do all types of combat sports :
VR fight team, Team Nogueira Lisbon, Checkmat Lisbon, Academia Vitoria Fight, Evolve Fight Club, Lionheart Academy, Sparring Lisboa, Fight Zone Lisboa, Gimnasio Clube de Lisboa (GCL), Luta Livre Portugal, Fighting Fit, Jiu-Jitsu Lisbon, Muay Thai Lisboa.
- Fitness, crossfit, individual workout : you can look up private gyms in your neighborhood, like Fitness Hut or Solinca or check out the calisthenics parks that are free and accessible at all times here.
Several parks in Lisbon have fitness trails with outdoor equipment for a complete workout. For example, Jardim da Estrela and Parque da Bela Vista offer spaces where you can use outdoor gym equipment while enjoying the surroundings.
- Football : Football is a passion in Lisbon. You can join local teams or play at public fields. Campo Grande, Estádio da Luz (home of Benfica), or Alvalade Stadium (home of Sporting CP) are notable football spots. Many areas have small public football pitches where you can practice or join pickup games.
- Yoga : you can join outdoor sessions in the Parque Eduardo VII, or there are plenty of studios around Lisbon offering various fitness classes like pilates.

- Climbing : Lisbon is home to several climbing gyms such as Rock Palac, Karma climbing and Vertigo Center, offering both indoor and outdoor climbing opportunities.
You can also find outdoor bouldering spots along the coast (Cascais)
- Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding : you can practice these activities on the Tagus River. You can rent equipment or join tours to explore Lisbon from the water. Belem Docks is a good place to rent equipment and enjoy a calm paddle.
- Hiking : Lisbon is surrounded by natural parks and amazing landscapes where you can hike : Monsanto Forest Park, Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, Arrábida Natural Park, Cabo da Roca, Boca do Inferno, Parque das Nações, Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park

- Lisbon sports University : If you want to take your sports training seriously, the University of Lisbon’s Sports Center (Centro de Desporto da ULisboa) offers a wide range of professional coaching, facilities, and sports programs for all levels.
- Dance : dancing has always been a great way of meeting new people and sharing at the same time a nice hobby.
Have you ever heard about Forro, Kizomba and Samba music?
Forró is a Brazilian musical genre, rhythm, dance style, and the event where it’s performed, originating from the Northeast region of Brazil, with a distinct sound and dance style that has gained national and international popularity.
The best place to learn forró in Lisbon is Espaço Baião, which is also a samba school.
Another great place to learn forró is Dança Mais by Camila Delphim in Campo de Ourique.
Kizomba: an angola original dance, is really known and common in Lisbon.
Many clubs and studios offer classes and social dancing nights.

UDance, a new dance school right next to the Jazzy Dance Santos location, also offers a large number of Kizomba classes.

B.leza Club near Cais do Sodré offers kizomba workshops and events, especially on Sundays starting from 7pm.
Samba:
Samba refers to both a vibrant Brazilian dance style and musical genre, rooted in African and Afro-Brazilian traditions.
